  Synopsis Weak ascent induced by an upper level low over Arizona combined with differential heating of terrain and modest buoyancy will be responsible for scattered showers and a few isolated thunderstorms across the eastern part of the state today. Greatest coverage of precipitation will be mainly confined to the higher terrain with decreased chances in the lower elevations. Showers and storms will be capable of producing brief heavy rain, small hail, gusty winds, and occasional lightning flashes. Rainfall amounts will be light and highly variable and dependent on storm frequency, coverage, and intensity with UA WRF forecasting a trace to 0.10 inch in the lower deserts and between a trace and 0.25 inches over the higher terrain. June 28th, 2024: Slight Increase in Storm Coverage In SE AZ Today

  Synopsis The mid level subtropical high will remain centered near the AZ/MX border today with weak westerly flow over AZ. Still plenty of moisture and instability in place to produce scattered showers and thunderstorms mainly in SE AZ this afternoon and evening. A slightly better chance for a few cells in Tucson this afternoon due to a combination of high DCAPE (better outflow boundary potential) and weak upper level divergence. Main impacts from storms will be lightning, gusty winds, blowing dust, and brief heavy rainfall. Current Conditions The mid level anticyclone remains anchored near the AZ/MX border this morning with weak westerly winds aloft over AZ. SPC 500mb analysis as of 16z this morning. August 21st, 2024: Active Afternoon Across Southeastern Arizona If Clouds Can Clear Out

Synopsis CAMs forecast an active afternoon and evening across much of Southeastern Arizona as an inverted trough moves northward across the region. The amount of buoyancy and associated storm coverage and intensity across the area will be primarily dependent on mid level cloud cover throughout the day. If clouds can clear by early afternoon, strong storms are possible across Southeast Arizona (including Tucson), but if clouds persist then there will likely be much less activity. Storms that develop have the potential to produce strong winds, blowing dust, and heavy rainfall that could lead to flash flooding.  Current Conditions At 9:45AM MST, visible satellite imagery and lightning detection displayed scattered showers and thunderstorms in Southern Arizona (south and west of Tucson) associated with a robust MCV.
